Les Claypool's mastery of the electric bass has brought him into the spotlight with his funky, creative playing style. Claypool mixes finger-tapping, flamenco-like strumming and a slap technique to develop his own unique style and has earned respect as one of rock's premier bass talents, sometimes being referred to as the best bass player that has ever lived, an Icon for bassists’ worldwide.
Primus began as Primate with Les Claypool, guitarist Todd Huth and various drummers, most notably Jay Lane. Primus began selling out local clubs with their out-of-control live act and irreverent approach to music (their catchphrase was "Primus sucks!").
Primus steadily became one of the most bizarre bands to gain significant mainstream airplay, headlining Lollapalooza in 1993, appearing on David Letterman and Conan O'Brien in 1995, and even making an appearance at Woodstock '94 where they performed their Pork Soda hit "My Name Is Mud" and were pelted with mud (Claypool claims to have mud still in his speakers). Also, in 1997, they were asked to play, and record, the theme song for the animated television show South Park. Claypool and Tom Waits have recorded on each other's records since 1991 and have continued to do so. In 1999 he let Activision use the song "Jerry Was a Race Car Driver" on the hit video game Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. “We the People” welcomes this great artist and can’t wait to hear him jam!

Famed for his unique style of guitar manipulation, Tom Morello is one of the most influential guitarists in modern rock. He founded the critically-acclaimed and Grammy-award winning group Rage Against the Machine that created a huge following due to their pioneering mix of rap and hard rock, politically-charged lyrics, and solidarity efforts on behalf of political prisoners, low-wage workers, and the Zapitistas, among others. Morello also formed Audioslave which went multi platinum.
Since '04, he's also performed as a solo acoustic artist, combining activism and music, under the pseudonym The Nightwatchman. Known for his outspoken politics, the Harvard grad co-founded Axis of Justice, an organization that focuses on peace, human rights and economic justice issues. Tom Morellos' accomplishments are too many too list. We the People, get ready for an innovative performance!
On the surface, the sample-reliant productions and monotone rapping styles of Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith had little to recommend them, but the duo's recordings as EPMD were among the best in hip-hop's underground during the late '80s and early '90s. Over the course of four albums (from the 1988 classic Strictly Business to 1992's Business Never Personal), they rarely varied from two themes: dissing sucker MCs and recounting sexual exploits. But a closer look reveals that the duo's rhymes were nothing less than incredible, simply undervalued because of their lack of intonation during delivery. EPMD also had a feel for a good groove, and created numerous hip-hop classics, including "It's My Thing," "You Gots to Chill," "Get the Bozack," "Strictly Business," and "Rampage."
Though EPMD's hardcore style influenced the urban-oriented gangsta '90s, Erick Sermon (aka E Double E; b. Nov. 25, 1968) and Parrish Smith (aka Pee MD; b. May 13, 1968) were both raised in the Long Island suburb of Brentwood. They moved into rap separately, with Smith DJing for Rock Squad on a single for Tommy Boy. After coming together in 1987 -- naming themselves EPMD, short for "Erick and Parrish Making Dollars" -- the duo recorded their debut "It's My Thing" in three hours. The single was later licensed to Chrysalis, and EPMD signed to Sleeping Bag/Fresh Records for debut album Strictly Business. Propelled by several strong singles ("You Gots to Chill," the title track), the album eventually went gold, as did 1989's follow-up, Unfinished Business.
Judging from their name, Suicidal Tendencies were never afraid of a little controversy. Formed in Venice, CA, during the early '80s, the group's leader from the beginning was outspoken vocalist Mike Muir. The outfit specialized in vicious hardcore early on -- building a huge following among skateboarders, lending a major hand in the creation of skate-punk -- before turning their focus eventually to thrash metal.
Suicidal Tendencies had a rough start that included being voted "Worst Band/Biggest Assholes, and there were many rumors of the band members being involved with gangs. Using the rumors and opposition to fuel creativity, they quickly gained a huge following and began performing at larger gigs and eventually all that controversy helped the band gain label attention. Still to this day, Suicidal Tendencies proves themselves influential to speed/thrash metal and punk rock bands worldwide. We can only anticipate what Suicidal Tendencies has in store for “We the People”.
DJ Premier is a prominent American hip hop producer and DJ, and the instrumental half of the duo Gang Starr, together with MC Guru on the lyrical side. Many fans and hip hop purists consider him to be the greatest hip hop producer ever. He is hailed as an architect of "hardcore East Coast hip-hop known by its heavy drums and sparse loops."
The Source magazine named DJ Premier one of the 5 greatest producers in hip-hop history, while editors from About.com ranked him as #1 in their "Top 50 Hip-Hop Producers" list.
Besides producing almost the entirety of the Gang Starr catalog with Guru, DJ Premier has created countless classics for many groups and solo artists since the early 90's. These include notable tracks for artists such as Nas ,Rakim , The Notorious B.I.G., KRS-One, Jay-Z, Common, Big L , M.O.P. Mos Def ,Dilated Peoples ,Snoop Dogg , The Lox ,Fat Joe , Capone-N-Noreaga , and many more..

Other non hip-hop artists that appear in Premier's production credits include big names such as Janet Jackson, Brandy, Limp Bizkit, D'Angelo, Craig David and Macy Gray. It will be Quite an honor to have Dj Premier @ “We the People Festival” 2008.
Jamaica's #1 singer of all time, Barrington Levy is a driving force in reggae music and remains the perennial favorite of audiences in Jamaica - and throughout the world. Always a solid voice and a uniquely expressive song style, Barrington is consistently at the forefront of the music scene, and has become the most requested vocalist in reggae music history.
In the late 1980's, Barrington Levy began working with veteran producer Jah Screw, and together they created some of reggae's most memorable recordings...
There was the classic album of Barrington's greatest hits dubbed Broader than Broadway, which is one of the best reggae collections ever created. This was released on the pioneering hip-hop label Profile, which helped Barrington to become more recognizable in the crossover market. After a stunning performance on the 1994 Sunsplash, Barrington was signed to MCA Records, but quickly parted ways with the label and began working with Jah Screw to make the Duets album, where Levy teamed with all the hottest DJs from Beenie Man to Lady Saw.
He came back larger than life with Bounti Killer on the song "Living Dangerously" - undisputedly the biggest reggae song of 1996, both in Jamaica and the United States, and for months held the #1 spot on the dancehall charts worldwide. Barrington was lifted to the top of the charts, his career in full swing again, and continues to remain at the top of playlists on every radio station in Jamaica, and dancehalls throughout the world.
Z-Trip is one of the biggest DJs of our time, doing over 100 shows a year, every year. Considered by many to be a founder of the mash-up movement, his musical tastes are eclectic and his mixing style rejects simple classification. His early independent releases have become highly sought after collectibles. Uneasy Listening, the collaboration with DJ P, was one of the first of its kind, and has sold for as much as $500 on eBay.
No other DJ can claim playing to 500,000 people opening for the Rolling Stones at Sars-stock in Toronto, playing the Bonaroo main stage to over 70,000 people 2 years in a row, in addition to headlining a tent at Coachella twice. He's also been busy around the world doing the Good Vibrations Festival in Australia 2006, as a headliner. All of this in addition to his US and international headlining sold out shows, and multiple club residencies.
While working in a bank, he started managing Soil, the band of Malakian and Tankian in 1993 after meeting them in a recording studio, where he was recording with his own band. In 1995, Shavo became the permanent bassist of the band. They then named themselves System of a Down after a poem titled Victims of a Down, which was written by bandmate Daron Malakian.
In addition, Odadjian is a popular DJ in the LA area, taking part in such events as the "Rock/DJ Explosion" on March 2nd 2001 at The Roxy in Hollywood, CA and collaborating with bandmate Tankian on SerArt, the singers side project with multitalented Armenian musician Arto Tunçboyaciyan. He goes by the name DJ Tactic.
With just a few (mostly underground) releases, Dilated Peoples energized the rap underground in similar fashion to fellow West Coast crew Jurassic 5. The duo of Evidence and Rakaa came together in the mid-'90s, when they met at many of the same hip-hop shows; after deciding to start making tracks together, they formed Dilated Peoples. Once they added to the fold an excellent turntablist, DJ Babu of the Beat Junkies, Dilated Peoples recorded the singles "Third Degree" and "Work the Angles" for ABB Records. The latter became an underground hit via hip-hop radio and club play, prompting Dilated Peoples' signing to Capitol.
The Platform followed in May 2000. The group's follow-up for Capitol, The Expansion Team, was released in late 2001 to positive reviews as well as a Top 40 placing, and the group hit the road the following March, touring with the film Scratch, a documentary about hip-hop DJs and turntablists. Neighborhood Watch followed in 2004. The loosely structured 20/20 was released in 2006 and featured guest appearances from Talib Kweli and reggae great Capleton.
It's difficult to avoid Bassnectar's own self-definition, which appears somewhere in all the press materials for the San Francisco-based outfit: "A free-form project that merges music, art, new media, social involvement, and community values; dedicated to a constantly evolving ethos of collaborative creation, self reinvention, and boundary-pushing experimentation." Or, to put it more succinctly, Bassnectar is a breakbeat-oriented electronic dance music act with a fine line in public relations and a sponsorship deal with Red Bull.
On record, Bassnectar is DJ, producer, and remixer Lorin Ashton with occasional guest performers, but live Bassnectar shows are freewheeling affairs with close to two-dozen people on-stage, from instrumentalists, DJs, and rappers to graffiti and video artists. Ashton began working as a DJ and remixer under the Bassnectar name in the late '90s, developing the live experience under heavy influence from the multimedia Burning Man Festival that takes place each summer in the California desert.
Bassnectar debuted on vinyl with the 2002 single "Float," followed by 2004's "Creation Lullaby" and a downtempo album, Tempo Rosso, that was released as a promo item for Red Bull. The first proper full-length Bassnectar album, Mesmerizing the Ultra, was released in 2005, followed by Underground Communication in 2007. BASSNECTAR is an act not to be missed, “We the People” prepare yourselves.
Ludicrous, bizarre, and uniquely original, few Artists have made such a splash in the dancehall scene than Eek-A-Mouse. An artist who in any other country would have been a one-hit wonder, in Jamaica became a household name having invented a whole new vocal style, sing-jay, flooding the airwaves with his catch phrases and going on to become a respected toaster. Eek-A-Mouse didn't start out as a novelty act. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and his first foray into the music world was as a cultural roots singer. Outlandish and exciting, “We the People” will be anticipating your performance!

Fishbone is an alternative rock band that plays a fusion of funk, ska, punk rock, reggae, heavy metal and more. The band was formed in the ghettos of South Central Los Angeles by Angelo Moore, also known as "Dr. Madd Vibe" . The group came from the same Los Angeles scene that spawned the Minutemen, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction.
Fishbone first gained attention with their live concerts, earning a reputation as one of the most diverse bands in the alternative rock genre. Their unique stew of different styles, mixed with hectic energy and pounding rhythms, was a huge influence on the funk/rock/new wave/metal/rap hybrid that would become popular in the 1990s.
Though the band had a manic, kinetic sound and stage presence, the group was mainly a ska/reggae band in its early years, then the band had turned up the distortion, and heavy metal and hardcore sounds started creeping into their music. Fishbone covers important topics such as the breakup of families, early 1900s racism, fascism, nuclear war, and oppression in lower income housing projects. A perfect match for “We the People”.
Ill Bill, is an American rapper and record producer from Brooklyn, New York. Having gained notoriety in the underground hip hop group Non Phixion, Ill Bill is known for his politically-themed lyrics and as the producer, founder and CEO of Uncle Howie Records. His brother Necro is also a rapper and producer.
Ill Bill was the main voice behind the now disbanded Non Phixion, and is currently involved with La Coka Nostra, along with Everlast, Slaine, Big Left, Danny Boy and DJ Lethal of House of Pain & Limp Bizkit fame. In 2004 he released his debut solo album What's Wrong with Bill? and has since dropped various solo mixtapes and collaborations in anticipation for his sophomore solo record and the upcoming La Coka Nostra album.
His next project is slated for a summer 2008 release. The B-Side Players are part of a new movement in popular music, spreading their message of culture, music and family, a band that honors the international cross-pollination that has always made music the universal language. They use any beat that catches their ear, regardless of geography or genre, to create a compelling, horn driven, polyrhythmic groove. “The root of all pop music is African,” says Karlos Paez, the band’s lead vocalist, trumpet player and founder. “Our sound acknowledges that fact. That’s why the music is so soulful. We’re playing the ancient beats that came from Africa to create reggae, son, Afro-beat and funk and mixing ‘em all together.
The band has been laying down their own inimitable global funk since they came together in 1994. Their incendiary live shows made them local legends, while their albums showcased a band with a restless musical intelligence, effortlessly blending genres to fashion their own forward looking, Latin flavored, future-funk. “We the People” welcomes back the B SIDE PLAYERS.
Flying Lotus is commonly identified as a hip hop producer, but his style is drawn from many genres, including jazz, electronic and Brazilian music. His hip hop beats are unique for their hazy, ambient sound, while his percussion is purposefully slightly off time, creating a messier, more organic atmosphere. Because of this, he is often likened to producers such as Madlib, Jneiro Jarel and J Dilla despite the fact that all the mentioned musicians have distinctly unique styles.
Flying Lotus is most famous (yet also unaccredited) for the music in the many of the segues of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, and he has also contributed remixes to fellow Plug Research artists, including Mia Doi Todd. Welcome FLYING LOTUS to the “We the People Music Festival”.
Timing has everything to do with the collaboration between 2Mex (Visionaries, Of Mexican Descent) and keyboardist Ikey Owens (The Mars Volta, Free Moral Agents). The initial idea came from “The Brand New Heavies” album “Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol. 1.” The concept was simple: a Hip-Hop album performed by human beings.
As the first sessions began, Ikey and 2Mex enlisted Matt Wingnal and his studio ”Tackyland” in suburban Long Beach, CA, to record the initial tracks (i.e. “Before You Say No,” “Falcon Gentle,” “Beautiful Freak”). Called in for these sessions were old friends: Marshall Goodman (Long Beach Dub All-Stars), Sean Otero (Soul Hustlers), Pat Bailey (Breakestra/The Rebirth).
Finishing up the second half of the album, Ikey and 2Mex wanted to go for more rock inspired tracks and hooked up with now present and permanent band members Chris Clawson, Travis Laws, Mendee Ichikawa (Free Moral Agents), and later, Jesse Wilder (Teen Heroes, Forcefeild On) was added to their live band.

Music can be contagious, inspiring, and poignant. Quinto Sol or Fifth Sun carries that type of emotion and sound - deeply rooted in community and roots music - from the Americas, to the Caribbean and Africa. Having emerged from the artist/activist community of East Los Angeles in 1994, Quinto Sol is roots-reggae at its core, woven seamlessly with Latin rhythms like cumbia, rumba, and son. A six piece band, Quinto Sol is a collective of musicians, inspired to use music as a tool for awareness of socio-political and economic issues facing their community; they do this by translating their own urban realities in every day life and the struggles of indigenous communities in the world, through conscious lyrics and powerful live performances. Nine years after the band's inception, Quinto Sol releases their second independent album and first national release, Barrio Roots. Barrio Roots documents music from a period that helped shape what is known today as the East L.A. arts "scene"; a contemporary Chicano-inspired arts movement where, incidentally bands like Quetzal and Ozomatli emerged and grew to international popularity. Quinto Sol takes you on a world beat tour unlike any reggae band around in the music circuit. Having performed with artists, such as: The Wailers, Third World, Inner Circle, Steel Pulse, Eek-A-Mouse, Maldita Vecindad, Jaguares, Malo, Ozomatli, Poncho Sanchez, Puya, Todos Tus Muertos and others, QS's fan base is as diverse as the musical fusion they produce and the bands with whom they've shared the stage; from L.A. to Mexico City and even Japan. A staple @ “We the People” welcome back.
Possessing a hyper-literate, intellectual style of rapping augmented with dizzying elocution that would tongue-tie even the fiercest auctioneer, Busdriver is eclectic and eccentric enough to cite vocalese jazz singer Jon Hendricks as a primary influence. Born Regan Farquhar, the Los Angeles MC was introduced to hip-hop culture early -- his father wrote the screenplay to one of the earliest films focusing on hip-hop, Krush Groove. He began rapping at age nine, releasing his first record at age 13 with his group, 4/29, named after the 1992 L.A. riots.
By the mid-'90s, Busdriver was a regular at the Project Blowed open mic, where he would meet future collaborators and underground luminaries like Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, and Freestyle Fellowship. And shortly after, the vinyl did flow. Busdriver guested on upward of 20 singles, and by 2001 he could no longer be contained by guest spots, releasing his first full-length, Memoirs of the Elephant Man. There were just as many detractors as supporters for his singular style, which was so densely packed it made his chosen name seem a reference for multiple-personality disorder, and the lo-fi production also left more listeners scratching heads than nodding them.
His next album, This Machine Kills Fashion Tips (2002), continued in a similar manner before being trumped by better production and more focused rhymes on Temporary Forever the same year. Joined by another West Coast avant-garde MC, Radioinactive, and the breezy, fractured pop of electronic producer Daedelus, Busdriver released yet another odd puzzle piece in 2003, Weather. Fear of a Black Tangent followed on Mush in 2005. After moving to Anti/Epitaph, the rapper issued RoadKillOvercoat, which featured production from Nobody and Boom Bip. With his very unique flow, BUSDRIVER is sure to rock the crowd @ “We the People”
When he wasn’t watching Yo MTV Raps or Pump It up, Scarub, like many other L.A. hip-hop heads, grew up listening to the all hip-hop radio station, KDAY. It was during these early years that Scarub first gave himself the name Quaz (The kid who did), and later Mudd Foot, before settling on Scarub as his mc moniker.
Scarub first hit the stage during an 8th grade talent show and he hasn’t looked back since. As a student at L.A.’s Hamilton High, Scarub hooked up with fellow students Eligh and Murs and the trio formed the 3 Meloncholy Gypsy’s or 3MG. Scarub like the rest of 3MG eventually made the move up to the bay area where he hooked up with Mystik Journeymen and was put down with the Living Legends crew.
Eligh's first official step into the hip-hop world was under the name lower m.c. and his first crew was the Boogalu Badboys with his friend Scarub. At the time, they were both attending Hamilton High School in L.A. They changed their name to Urban Instinct and then they met Murs, a fellow Hamilton student. The three of them became known as 3 Melancholy Gypsys (3MG). Eligh was living with his aunt and uncle, but was kicked out of the house.
This would end up being the event that led to him becoming part of the Living Legends. After being kicked out, Eligh moved up to the bay area and began staying on a friend's couch. The friends he was staying with had a house party one night and one of the partygoers was The Grouch. Through a mutual friend they were introduced and ended up hooking up to record a song together. While they were working on the song, Sunspot came by and met Eligh and brought Eligh into the crew. From there, the rest is Legends history. Eligh credits a wide range of musical influences including Michael Jackson, Freestyle Fellowship, and Bob Dylan. Under his beat-making alter ego, Gandalf, Eligh has helped provide the backbone of the Legends sound and is responsible for many of the Legends classic songs. Eligh's latest project, The Grouch & Eligh "No More Greener Grasses," is available now. The release date of Eligh's new solo album, "Enigma", is April 5.
The Los Angeles hip-hop underground is littered with dozens of interesting characters such as the MC's in Non Human Intelligence (Abyss, Dimension and Prizm). The trio combines elements of conscious hip-hop with elements of drum & bass and trip-hop to create a sound wholly original.
The group met while in high school and went through a variety of names such as Lyrical Concept and Poetic Intellex before deciding on Non Human Intelligence. "We don't think like your average human beings," explains Abyss. "It is a symbol of three childhood friends with a common love in creating original, out of this world music with no limitations."
NHI hopes to change "the monotony of hip-hop today" by producing tracks of socially conscious hip-hop that transcends the usual labels. "It's not the stereotypical 808 with hand clap stuff" says Prizm. Hip-hop heads familiar with Hieroglyphics, Visionaries and Soul Position will find them refreshing to listen to.
NHI boasts an impressive resume that includes performances with Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, Raekwon The Chef and Eminem. They've collaborated with the likes of Will.I.Am of the Black Eyes Peas and Imani of Pharcyde. "NHI has a lot of energy" says Imani. "They are exactly what hip-hop is missing."
Non Human Intelligence is laying down the final tracks on their debut album, Music to Listen to While Vacationing on Earth.

MAETAR is a Hebrew word meaning string, or vibrations of change. For brothers Itai (bass) and Hagai (horns), music is more than genre, more than song, it is an agent of peace. Their passionate and unique instrumental music culls from jazz, world beat, funk, and classical music, and their roots in war torn Israel make their cross cultural imperative for peace rich with depth and substance. MAETAR is a Los Angeles based group fronted by brothers Itai, on bass, percussion, guitar, vocals and keyboards, and Hagai on trumpet, flugelhorn, flutes, shells, keys, vocals, and percussion

Continuing his prodigous output, Sean Price also released a well received mixtape, Master P in 2007, featuring many members of the BCC as well as other artists like Earatik Statik, Casual, Shabaam Sahdeeq, and UG. Playing off the reference in the title, the cover art for the mixtape featured a parody of the traditional Pen & Pixel artwork made famous by No Limit Records release.
Recently, Price was featured on a show called "The Breakdown" on ItsHipHop.tv where he discussed his work, his past family life and the realness of his lyrics amongst other things.[1]
Also, Price's song, "Church" featured in the 2007 video game Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It's also mentioned in the end credits.
Markus James has been recording and performing original, Blues-based music with traditional Malian musicians since 1994, when he first made his way to the village of Niafounke, home of the legendary Sonrai musician Ali Farka Toure. Markus' critically acclaimed Mali-based albums have been warmly received in the US, Europe and Mali, and he was honored to have a track included in the UK compilation "Sahara- Blues of the Desert", alongside such great artists as Ali Farka Toure, Baaba Maal, Yousou N'Dour and Tinariwen. Markus' long-term collaborations in Timbuktu with 3 Malian master musicians is the subject of the award-winning documentary film "Timbuktoubab", seen on many PBS stations throughout the US.
Markus' new album "Snakeskin Violin" is a kaleodiscopic journey in which fellow travelers appear and vanish, and features collaborations with trance groove Wassoulou hunters in Bamako, a shaman in Timbuktu, old-school drummers in Como, Mississippi, traveling Tamasheks in California, and African Diaspora musicians in the US.
In the US, Markus James tours with The Wassonrai, featuring Malian artists based in the US, including multi-instrumentalist Mamadou Sidibe , percussionist Karamba Dioubate, and Amadou Camara. They have performed in numerous settings, including PRI / BBC's "The World", at festivals, performing arts centers, theatres, and in clubs.
Alluring and revolutionary, bright and buoyant, exemplary in their ability to evolve from what is expected, the Los Angeles-based musical collective known as West Indian Girl has created its majestic, engaging sophomore disc 4th & Wall, their first and long anticipated release for Milan (Emilie Simon, Lisa Gerard). On an album brimming with instant, artful pop classics, this one-time studio duo turned living, breathing modern rock sextet has vaulted beyond the electronic banner under which it once uncomfortably resided.
Launched by the expansive and amazingly memorable "Blue Wave," West Indian Girl’s fusion of undeniable guitar riffs, prog-like keyboard flourishes and pulsing rhythms pour a perfect foundation for the mind-melding hook and tsunami of blissful harmonies that follow. "It’s about finding the best thing in life, be it a wave or a state of mind or a perfect escape," co-founding bassist Francis Ten says.
Stemming from an infectious hook and a guitar part brought to the band by his musical partner Robert James, the ode to surfing on the bluest wave is destined to become a favorite of both discerning music lovers and aberrant fun seekers across the globe. Still, it’s surprising to learn that the shimmering, sun-streaked anthem (and its parent album) was crafted amid the decaying, urban environs where the group’s studio resides. And it’s that corner of the world that gives West Indian Girl - which also counts vocalist Mariqueen Maandig, keyboardist Nathan Van Hala, drummer Mark Lewis and keyboardist/vocalist Amy White - its album title.
